After large-format watercolors by Heinrich Modersohn were shown at the Kunstverein Schwäbisch Hall in 2013 and GALERIE BORN, Born a. Darss in 2015, early photographic works by the artist could be seen at the Produzentengalerie Hamburg 2014.

Now GALERIE BORN, Berlin is showing a new body of work by Modersohn, paintings on canvas, all of which were created in 2016 / 2017.

As in Modersohn’s wood prints and watercolors, it is obvious in his painting that light seems to have its origin in the interior of the works. The interspaces are illuminated, the background of the painting becomes a resonance board – on and in front of which the figures develop. This scenario, in which the intermediate space plays a major role, points to Heinrich Modersohn’s way of working. You would almost like to describe it as a chain of reactions. Overlapping and blending create a dense mesh, lines continue as if it were only natural, surfaces expand, and in the interplay of background and foreground everything is connected with all else. The painting is characterized by spontaneous subsidences, composed rather than constructed. Transparent and opaque aspects complement each other in dialogue to create a rhythmic pattern in the work.
